Is Being Too Suspicious Wrecking My Marriage?

By Andrew Rusbatch

One of the first things people feel when motivated to find evidence of their partner cheating or not is guilt. Guilt that the relationship has got to the point where you no longer communicate as freely as you used to. Guilt that the trust you have for one another seems to have diminished. Guilt that the efforts you are going to in order to find out the truth may be doing more harm to your marriage.

The first thing I am going to tell you is that this is a perfectly normal feeling to have. Coming to terms with having to look for evidence of cheating may be the first time you admit to yourself that the relationship is in trouble. For many, it is the end of the fairytale, when they tell themselves that their marriage is no longer what they dreamed of and now requires some remedial work.

Instead of focusing on the guilt, I want you to examine the circumstances that led you to this place. What has happened in the relationship where you believe that your spouse would be capable of doing this? At what stage in the marriage did you switch from being best friends and lovers to people who no longer trust each other?

It's easy to put your spouse's strange behavior down to a traumatic event such as the death of a parent or friend, or a historical circumstance such as a troubled childhood, family life, or adolescence.

Ultimately you let the events of your past define you, or you can choose to learn what you can from your past and move on. It's not okay to excuse your partner's cheating or lack of communication because of something that happened so far in their past. It's time to see it for what it is and find ways to get the information you need.

The guilt or grief at the passing of the innocence of your relationship is something that will pass, and ultimately you need to decide what you are going to do with the evidence once you gather it. Do you want to save your relationship, or do you want to end it?

I want you to examine why you feel the guilt. Is there something that you could have done to prevent this from happening? Could you have intervened and tried to fix your relationship problems sooner? Is your guilt at not doing more to prevent this from happening stopping you from finding the truth?

One of the key ways in moving forward and releasing yourself of the guilt you feel is remembering that no matter what the circumstances, we all choose how we react to things. Some people will see problems in the relationship and choose to talk about it, others will pledge to work harder on the relationship and find new ways to reconnect and love each other, and others will go outside the relationship and have an affair.

While you may share the guilt for the deterioration in the relationship where communication decreased and you started to take each other for granted, the choice to have an affair was ultimately outside of your control. It's important to remember that.

Don't let the guilt get in the way of you finding out the truth. It's time to put and end to the doubt.
