Portable Lie Detector Tips

If your relationship has decayed to the point that you are now starting to doubt yourself as well as your partner it may be time to invest in a portable lie detector.

Cheaper than hiring a private detective, a portable lie detector reads emotional levels by analyzing the human voice. These devices are not the bulky old polygraphs with their scratching needles hat we are used to seeing in the movies. These new personal lie detectors can be slipped into a purse or a pocket and are not much larger than a cell phone. Most weigh about five ounces and come with a cable that allows you to attach it to a cell phone. A reliable state of the art personal portable lie detector can be purchased for about $70.00.

All lie detectors are based on the premise that humans experience physiological changes when they tell a lie. Old style polygraphs measured changes in heart rate, blood pressure and sweating levels to determine whether or not someone was telling the truth. These new palm sized portable lie detectors measure subtle changes in vocal patterns to detect lies.

The reason you can measure a "lie" by a vocal pattern is because changes in blood pressure causes the frequency at which the vocal chords vibrate to also change. The lie detector recognizes the impact of stress on the vocal chord and relays it as a degree of honesty.

The portable lie detector analyzes three factors in order to determine whether or not someone is telling the truth.

The emotional - This indicates the level of excitement attached to the words that are being said. Lying requires vocal effort. The more vocal effort that is projected into the sentence, the more likely it is that the person is exaggerating or telling a fairy tale.

The cognitive - This indicates the amount of conflict or agreement that the speaker has with the words that are being spoken. It takes a slight bit of physical effort to say the opposite of what you are thinking and these new voice analyzing lie detectors can easily pick this excess effort up.

The physiological - This indicates the stress patterns of the human voice. When not stressed, the human voice betrays a certain pattern. When it deviates from this pattern, through the pronunciation of sounds, breathing patterns, voice range and other factors, then it is possible that the person is lying.

If portable lie detectors have a drawback it is that they require a voice sample of the individual telling the truth before they can do their job. It is this sample that the lie detector uses to make a comparative analysis between what your lover sounds like telling the truth and what they might sound like if they are lying. This means that you must capture a sample of your partner's voice in a situation where they cannot possibly tell a lie. The device then makes a comparative mathematical analysis to calculate whether or not the person is lying or telling the truth.

Manufacturers of lie detectors call procuring this truthful voice sample as "calibrating" the lie detector. The machine then creates a multi-dimensional voice profile of this statement using a mathematical model, and then uses that to compare subsequent voice samples. Voice measurements include the actual words spoken; the unique elements in every voice; the expressions used; levels of excitement, conflict and stress,

You can use most portable lie detectors with the inbuilt microphone, an outside microphone, over a cellphone, or in face-to-face conversations. Many models also allow you to record a conversation. Results are displayed on a LCD screen using two icons.

For example, the Truster the very popular personal portable lie detector sues an apple icon and an icon that looks like a pot with a lid to indicate to you a degree of falsehood in a statement.

The intact apple icon indicates truth. The more bites into the apple, the more likely it is that the person is lying. There are ten degrees of truth from the whole apple. If the icon looks like an apple core it indicates that the person is telling a full blown lie. An apple that appears on the LCD screen with just a few bites in it means the person is exaggerating.

The icon which looks like a lid on a boiling pot tells you what the stress level is of the person speaking. This also goes up to nine levels--the highest level which shows the lid being blown off the pot indicates a stress condition of 90 percent or more while the lowest indicates 10 percent or less. The higher the stress level, the more likely it is that the individual is lying.

For the most part, portable lie detectors are said to be as reliable as polygraph lie detectors. However, despite their reliability, you should also know that evidence from a portable lie detector is still not admissible as evidence in a court of law in the United States. However, they can help demystify a situation as well as confirm your gut feelings and suspicions. This can help snap you out of denial and encourage you to seek out the real evidence that you need in order to confront the situation. The worst thing about cheaters is that they have a way of paralyzing you as you are caught in a gray zone somewhere in between believing your lover or believing your own gut instincts.
